These photographs depict the place where the refugees live on the Calais coast while they wait to attempt the perilous journey across the Channel to reach England. In the photographs the people are absent, but their presence is revealed by the human traces they leave behind: blankets in the dunes, a passageway in the undergrowth, discarded clothes, and the ramshackle remains of their shelter in “the Jungle”. The lack of people in the photographs is perhaps an attempt to escape the sentimentalism of humanitarian photography. It also perhaps reflects the “mauvaise conscience” I felt when in this place trying to tell this story.
